In Oakland, shops are busiest on Monday mornings and before holiday weekends, so a mid-week appointment gets a car seen faster. Labor rates across California vary by neighborhood and by shop type, from small independents to dealership service bays, and mobile mechanics now cover many routine jobs in the driveway. Before authorizing a repair, ask for the estimate in writing, whether the shop warranties parts and labor (12 months / 12,000 miles is common, some offer more), and whether it can provide a loaner or a shuttle. Check the listing for hours, the makes the shop works on and its Google rating, then call ahead, since walk-in capacity is limited at smaller shops.
The business lists hours on 7 days of the week. Typical hours are 9 am–7 pm. As with most places, expect changes around holidays; the phone number below is the fastest way to confirm. You can reach A-1 Mufflers & Custom Works at (510) 636-0937; calling is usually the quickest way to ask about availability, prices or directions.
Its Google rating is 4.2 out of 5 from 88 reviews, a solid but mixed picture; reading the most recent reviews will tell you what to expect.
Oakland is in California, on the West Coast, where the climate ranges from foggy coast to hot inland valleys, wildfire season can affect air quality in late summer, and traffic is the main thing to plan around. Getting around Oakland is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across California's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I had a great experience at A-1 Mufflers & Custom Works. I called for an estimate on my luxury truck because I wanted a stronger engine sound without being too aggressive. Alberto, the owner, answered personally and invited me in for a free sound test to make sure I’d be happy with the result. The service went beyond my expectations. He really listened to what I wanted, and the final sound is perfect — deeper and more powerful while still keeping that luxury feel. Highly recommend this shop!

I was upgrading my exhaust system and dropped by A1 without an appointment. I got an upfront price and had the job done in maybe 30 min. They move fast! The main reason for the 5 stars is the chat I had with Alberto and the tech I didn't get the name of (Mazda-San). I could have spent hours there just chatting with them. I spent more time talking to them than the install took. Thats the kind of business I like to support. Those with a human connection. There are too many businesses who take our money and rush us out the door. This place is different. I felt like I knew them for years. Alberto offered to personally help me with something not involving my car and I thought that was class. I highly recommend you give them a try. Please be patient when you show up, they'll get to you as soon as their able. I almost drove off because of it and glad that I didn't. I'll see you guys again real soon! We'll do SEMA for sure.

These guys were very helpful in helping diagnose the problem with my vehicle. I was fortunate to find a lesser quote at a place closer to home. But I am very happy to recommend them for great service.
